When she lands a job at one of New York’s premier boutique investment firms, Janet begins to hope that her luck is finally turning for the better. Not only is she happy with her new paycheck, but things also seem to be looking up on the personal front, as the company’s handsome attorney expresses keen interest in Janet. However, her euphoria is short-lived, as Janet soon discovers alarming facts about her new employer’s business tactics. When her boss dismisses her suspicions as groundless, Janet finds herself confiding to a cute IT engineer, Dean Snider. The closer she gets to Dean, the more Janet is tempted to break her rule of not dating co-workers, but what she doesn’t realize is that everything she knows about Dean, including his occupation and even his name, is a lie.

Dennis Walker is a top-notch white collar crime investigator who will stop at nothing to put culprits away. I've read several cleaning/organizing books and this is my favorite! The book itself is efficient and an enjoyable read. (something I never expected to say about a cleaning book) I like the way the house is divided and the overall approach to getting organizing- all to meet individual needs. Great ideas and recipes for staying efficient! I definitely recommend this one!
I love idea of this book- showing us the perspective of the wives of the astronauts. Their story is compelling and truly intriguing. The actual writing style wasn't my favorite. I had trouble staying "involved" with the story even though it was really interesting to me. I enjoyed hearing about the women despite the writing. They really went through a lot so we could race to space.

We've made wonderful friends, found some amazing books, and loved interacting with you.

So it's with a bit of sadness that we announce we will be closing up shop. Reading is like breathing for us - and discovering new books and authors has been a wonderful adventure. However, our lives keep becoming more involved - and let's face it, crazier - and we've reached the point where it's right for us to bow out.

We will be posting reviews until the end of April, at which point we'll say goodbye.

Thank you for your support, for allowing us into your lives, and for letting us influence in some small way the contents of your bookshelves.Rebecca McKinnonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17310276170780281950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-319619235179101748.post-84245210020792605962014-03-13T04:00:00.000-06:002014-03-13T04:00:05.114-06:00Chocolate and Conversation

Determined to rescue
their favorite teacher, Conner, Lexa, and Melanie confront their worst
fears and use their powers in unexpected ways to defeat Lady Nightwing,
the treacherous Darkhand leader. But when the trio makes a terrible
choice to save Dr. Timberi, their powers may not be enough to keep
everyone alive. A thrilling conclusion to the Middle School Magic
series!
The end of a trilogy is always somewhat bittersweet for me, and this was no exception. Mr. Bell has taken us on a fun, magic-filled journey - and the worst thing I can say about it is: It's over.

Kids will love the magic, the adventure, the fun, the real-to-life characters. Parents will appreciate the examples of self-sacrifice and friendship, loyalty and teamwork. The kids stick up for what they know to be true, even when the some of the adults doubt them.

You might assume from that list of qualities that the book is preachy, but the exact opposite is true. Each of the kids faces their own troubles, and learns to deal with them in their own ways.

If you haven't read the first two books, I highly suggest reading them before this book - if you don't, you'll be playing catch-up the whole time.

If you're looking for a good, well-written, exciting, middle-grade-age-appropriate adventure, this series is for you!
Zoe Miller is a 15-year-old witch with a talent for potions. She's working hard to find a substitute for toad slime. Since fat-free margarine has been found to be a substitute for dead man's toe, she's hopeful that she'll find one.

Then there's all the so-called normal stuff. Like high school, her annoyingly selfish "friend" Anya, and her crush on Anya's ex-boyfriend Jake.

Now, Zoe's dad is dating Jake's mom, and things are getting more and more complicated. If only Zoe could brew a potion or two and set everything straight. Zoe can't. If she brews a self-serving potion, bad things will happen to her appearance. Like a crooked nose, giant wart, green skin, rotting teeth--the whole ugly witch stereotype.

Zoe's tired of fate interfering so cruelly in her life. Can you really blame her for putting her potions to not-so-good use and stirring up trouble?
Despite the frenzy of her high school days, she hasn't had a date in seven months. With nothing new in her love life, she starts to fall back into old habits -- and old insecurities. Her first love, Ben Jones, is back after two years in Switzerland. Maybe there’s still a chance he can make Heather happy for life. And then there's the more dangerous prospect of the looming return of Heather's favourite vampire. Being on her own would probably be easier if she didn't have to watch Tannis, her best friend, dating Lars Hansen. He’s a man who seems eerily perfect – or, at least, perfect for Heather. Set in a large LDS singles' ward in the mid-1990s, this is a clean, uplifting story about the clumsy, convoluted, crowded road to true love.

Even though she's still considered the new-girl, she's feeling more at home. She's dating her dream boy, Ben Jones, and she's on track to become the town's first female valedictorian. But when Ben leaves town to go to university in the capital city, Heather is left to make friends with Aaron, the town's resident gloomy vampire-boy. Will she make it out of high school unscathed? Follow Heather through the sequel to "Parakeet Princess" as she navigates the perils of mandatory gym class, a long distance relationship, and finding out the hard way what love is not. This is a clean, uplifting story about growth and girl-power. Set in the 1990s, it has something to offer older readers looking to see reflections of their own experiences.

Heather MacLean is in a new world. She's always been happy to be a Mormon but now, at age sixteen, she's moved to a small town where Mormons are mainstream instead of a minority. It's a shock to her system -- and her love life. Though she doesn't feel like she fits in at her new school, Heather finds friends at the restaurant where she works part-time. Her new friends aren't Mormons. But that doesn't keep some of them from being interested in more than friendship. The most tempting of them is her best friend's twin brother. His name is Wayne and he's got a natural charisma that makes Heather wonder if she'd like to follow him -- no matter where he leads. Guiding her through her growing pains is Heather's older brother's new best friend, Ben. He's an awkward, thoughtful boy who calls Heather "Parakeet" after his family's pet bird. Can Heather overcome her prejudices and Ben's reserve and find romance with him? Or will she take a giant step away from the way of life she's always known and follow Wayne? Set in the early 1990s, the story offers something for young adult readers and for older readers looking to revisit their own high school days.

I like it because it's clean and I can recommend it to teenagers without worrying if the content is too explicit. This is a quick read about a girl who's moved to a new community. For some, I'm sure it's an insight to the heartbreak and struggles of those suffering from cancer. For me, it's way too close to home. I can't approach this book without my own raw emotions surfacing and some of the implications made by the author truly bothered me. Overall, it portrays the unfairness of illness and the devastation it brings. All of that is true. However, it seems to be more focused on portraying a message and on being philosophical than seems balanced. In a book like this, humor can be a major asset. However, I felt that it was ill-applied in this story.

When Jamie returns to her hometown of Aspen Grove, her mother's Chick Flick Clique friends are exceedingly curious about the state of her relationship with long-time boyfriend, Christopher Ellington. Jamie is curious herself. When Christopher proposes for the third time, she hesitantly accepts. Since he immediately leaves for an extended overseas business trip, she's relieved to have some time to get used to the idea, placing the ring safely beside her tiara and not mentioning it to anyone. New neighbor, David Stevens, has good reason to avoid beautiful women, but when his three-year-old daughter, Sunny, sees Jamie, she's convinced she's her mommy. As he begins to learn more about her, he realizes she's not like his dead wife, and he's glad she's not wearing any man's ring. How did life get so complicated so quickly? Jamie's gone from Miss California to Miss America to Big Mistake. Is she about to lose everyone she's come to care about?

For the first time, ten years after her abduction from her Salt Lake City bedroom, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crime

On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

Now for the first time, in her memoir, MY STORY, she tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served.
In the nine years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, traveling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. In 2012, she married Matthew Gilmour, whom she met doing mission work in Paris for her church, in a fairy tale wedding that made the cover of People magazine.
I had mixed feelings approaching this book. The few things I've heard from Elizabeth Smart have been so uplifting and inspiring. I am truly amazed by her and really wanted to hear her story. At the same time, I knew it would be heart-breaking. She endured so many horrors but kept her faith and sanity throughout. I was impressed that she didn't elaborate on all the details that others might have. Overall, I found this to be uplifting and hopeful. I hope this book brings increased awareness of abuse and neglect while inspiring people to do good in their communities and the world.

Elena’s in a new world, and a new school. The cutest guy around may be
an evil dragon, a Prince wants Elena’s heart, and a long dead sorcerer
may be waking up to kill her. Oh. And the only way Elena’s going to
graduate is on the back of a dragon of her own.
Teenage girls don’t believe in fairy tales. Now it’s time for Elena to believe – in herself.
Honestly, as soon as I saw the cover I knew I had to read the book. Yep, that cool sword got me - I'm a sucker for swords. Maybe one of these days I should actually learn how to use a sword.......

Moving every three months, without explanation, rhyme, or reason. That's been Elena's life. All that is about to change, though, when her father is killed by an attacking dragon.

In this story, we've got your fish-out-of-water, girl-in-the-dark story when Elena learns she's been taken to a Bermuda Triangle world she cannot leave. Most of the people around her are, in fact, dragons. Great, I can easily take that in stride!

The book starts out quick-paced and attention-grabbing. After a little bit things slow down so Elena can try to dig out some answers - in between some of your typical high school drama. (Which, I admit, got a little tiresome here and there - there was just so much I felt could have been explored, but some of it got stunted in the HSDrama).

In the last part of the book, there are a series of tests that only Elena can face - there were some things in there I truly enjoyed.

I have to admit, this is not one of those books I couldn't walk away from for a bit - but I'm very curious to see where Ms. Woods will take us, along with Elena, next.
Jazmine Crawford doesn't make decisions. She doesn't make choices. She doesn't make friends. Jazmine Crawford only wants one thing: to be invisible. For Jazmine, it's a lot easier to take out her hearing aid and drift along pretending that nothing's wrong than it is to admit that she's heartbroken. She starts to come out of her shell when she's forced to be in the school play and even makes friends with bouncy Gabby and chocolate-loving Liam. But can she stand up to the school bully, and is she strong enough to face the truth about what really happened to her dad?
Wonderful story about a young girl who wants to be invisible. This book is beautifully written and addresses many serious topics woven into a young girl's life. Jazmine has many struggles as the book begins and really hasn't found a place where she fits. When she finds herself in a new situation, she begins to grow into herself and learns to stand up for who she's becoming. I think many people can relate to Jazmine and even her mom. Very well written!
